CANON PERSONALITY:
- Sakunosuke Oda, also known as Odasaku. A strange man out of the bunch in the Mafia, who’s mostly known for his ridiculous principle of not killing. He rarely speaks, barely cracking even so much as a smile towards most of his colleagues in the organization. As a rank-less member, he does not hold enough value to join even the lowest ranking squads. To most, he’s an unremarkable man who can be tossed aside without a second glance.
But, like most things, what they see in Odasaku is only the tip of the iceberg.
It’s not as if he has some strange, dual personality or a mask to hide his true intentions. It’s quite the opposite, in fact. To those that get to talk to Odasaku for more than three seconds can get to know just how straightforward he is. He’s a man of very few words, but they will always say what he feels, means, or intends to do. An honest man of his word, Oda will never have any hidden intentions. As Dazai, his friend, puts it: “Odasaku is a man with no hidden motives”. However, being so straightforward makes him nearly incapable of reading between the lines in others. Just how he gives full honesty to everyone around him, he innocently believes that everyone is being honest right back at him. It’s a dangerous mindset to have, especially in an organization so filled with darkness like the Mafia, but he seems to have no intention of changing it.
In fact, Odasaku is quite reluctant of change, whether it’s sudden or gradual. At the age of fourteen, he decided to leave his job as an assassin in order to pursuit a better life, to redeem himself. So where does he go? To the Mafia, of course. Added to his straightforwardness, he is also very stubborn, be it in situations, mindsets, etc.; once he has something in mind nothing will take it away. Even years after he stops killing, even after he adopts five orphans that were victims of gang violence, he continues to see himself as the same murderer that he used to be. It’s an unhealthy mindset, but it’s what he believes is so and no one is able to dissuade him from it—not even his friends.
So, with this mindset of pity and self-deprecation, Odasaku is, paradoxically, quite the doormat when it comes to those he considers ‘superior’. And who does he consider to be superior? Almost anyone. Due to his rank (or lack thereof) he believes to himself to be lower than the rest, even his two friends, and allows himself to be used by everyone around them. He may feel hurt or maybe even disagree—but he will never speak up about it. Because he considers himself unimportant and useless in comparison to the others, he feels that his opinion is the same. He feels that his existence is no more than a burden for those around him and, even though his friend is one of the strongest, most high-ranked members in the Mafia, he rarely seeks for other’s help. Odasaku does not wish to burden anyone else with his existence, so he shoulders every responsibility on his own, internalizing every opinion, emotion, or hope that he has. Though he has been friends with Dazai and Ango for years, the first person to learn about his dream of becoming a writer was actually the villain of the story, a mere stranger to Oda.
But internalizing everything takes a toll on someone, and even Odasaku is no exception to the rule. Though he is a pillar of patience and calmness, even that erodes away with time, usage, and abuse. And when those walls and pillars are broken down completely, then what’s left is anger. Oda’s anger is something to be feared, to the point that even Dazai makes a note to warn his subordinates against testing the man’s patience. His anger is not explosive, but rather burning at a bone-chilling temperature. He turns calculating, and ruthless, absolutely detaching himself from his emotions. He's able to murder dozens of soldiers without batting an eyelash, his expression unchanging from its usual deadpan. As a child, an assassin, Odasaku had one clear idea: “There are no pardons in this world. Only revenge for betrayals”. His anger is made solely out of a need for vengeance towards those who have wronged him and those he cares about. Even though he spent years repressing this side of himself, one thing managed to knock it all down: the death of his children.
But, there is one last thing about this very complex man: how kind he's able to be. Even though he does not see himself as such, he’s a kind man who can empathize with almost everyone including Dazai, whose heart is described as being shut and locked away from everyone else and Gide, the man that killed his children. Despite having no relation to him, he rescued five children and did his very best to raise them until the day they were killed. He may consider himself to be a terrible murderer but, in truth, he’s someone who simply wants to be on the side that helps and saves people.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Ability: His ability, Flawless, allows him to see his future in five to six seconds ahead. The downside to this is that, if he does something to change his immediate future, he won't be able to foretell how it changes.
- Physical skill: As a former assassin and the Mafia's errand boy, Oda's quite capable of doing both physical labor and doing acrobatic stunts that would probably break the bones of most normal people, such as jumping off of two story buildings and landing unharmed.
- Gun wielding: Oda's gun-wielding capabilities are one of a kind, being able to shoot his targets point-blank even while blindfolded.

AU HISTORY:
AU PERSONALITY:
- Sakutarou Oda, in his 23 years of life, has barely stepped a foot outside of Recolle.
His father, a Japanese-American whose family runs a Japanese curry restaurant down the street. His mother, a first-degree Japanese woman who moved to the United States in order to escape the scrutinous watch of her family. The result? A happy family that helps run the family restaurant and Sakutarou, who is just as many parts rebellious as he is quiet. He was the child that was made fun of throughout elementary and middle school for being small, quiet, and an avid fan of books, but went through an incredible growthspurt between sophomore and junior year of high-school.
The quietness never left, though.
Neither did his love for books.
Nor his love for curry.
His parents, wishing for nothing less than Sakutarou's happiness, gave him their full support when he decided that his dream was to become a writer. The path to doing so was much harder than Sakutarou would have ever expected, though. Never would he have imagined taking classes with Chuuya or bonding with Jamie. Other incredible experiences (that he wishes to forget) include having to write about K-Pop fandom while working under Ginger. Actually, that's the only moment of his life he wishes to forget-- but his family has yet to find that webpage, so he's still safe.
Literary wise, publishing is a lot more difficult for Oda than he had imagined during his college days. A good part of his short stories are dark and unsettling, painting a clear picture on how terrible humanity can be. The other part paints the inverse; people that must survive through the cruelty of reality, and somehow make it through. Needless to say, very few magazines have published his works. Their excuses have always been the same: it's too depressing!
But the couple times he has been published, Sakutarou doesn't celebrate much either. A glass of whiskey, at most. He always wants to do better, but nothing that he does is enough for him.
Since publishing hasn't brought him nearly enough revenue to pay anything other than his phone bill, Sakutarou is easy to find around the city. He might be a cashier for a couple of months, then a waiter, or maybe a bartender in Chuuya's bar. On the weekend afternoons,
he's easy to spot at his family's restaurant, cooking one of the only things he knows how to cook (that isn't instantly made or microwaveable): Curry. Between those many jobs is when he sits down and writes...or...more like he stares blankly at the computer screen while he smokes a cigarette. Same thing.
When does he sleep, you ask? Usually between 3 and 4 am, on good days. On busy days, he doesn't sleep. This man is powered by coffee and curry.
AU PERSONALITY:
- On the surface, Sakutarou and Sakunosuke might seem incredibly similar-- they're both quiet, both love books, both love curry, and both have quite a low self-esteem.
It's in what they don't say where they differ, and they differ greatly.
First of all, Sakutarou grew up in quite a stable home-- he never had a need to become a hired killer as a child. This means that he never had to develop a cold, cynical attitude towards the world, nor does he have a need for revenge or does he have any killing intent. Hell, Sakutarou probably doesn't even know how to handle a gun, let alone shoot two.
Unlike Sakunosuke, Sakutarou also has less doubts about his own capabilities. He beats himself down not because he believes he's incapable of doing it, but because he believes he can do even better than he's done. It means that he's not drowning in the apathy that his original self has; his decision to follow his dreams to become a writer is solid proof of this. Even though he keeps getting rejected, Sakutarou refuses to give up, because this is something he wants. Unlike Sakunosuke, he lets himself dream and want-- not to the point of selfishness, but to a point that is already considerably higher than his canon counterpart.
Besides this, Sakutarou is, through and through, an incredibly nice person. Because of his lack of cynicism, one might even believe that he's incredibly innocent for an 23 year old author who loves to read and write psychological thrillers and suspense. He'll give money and food to the homeless when he's able to and do his best to speak up when he sees someone that needs help while Sakunosuke would have sighed sadly and averted his eyes. Sakutarou may be quiet and he may have let people pick on him when he was younger, but it was simply because he didn't care about being commented on. When it happens to others, though, that's a different story.
Sakutarou is also much more honest and open with those that he considers friends. In canon, part of Sakunosuke's issues were that him and his two friends were never honest with each other until it was too late. While it will take time for Sakutarou to open up and try to downplay his own issues, the fact that he's willing to say something about himself is already remarkable.
