[ if oda had a stronger will, he would've just turned around and walked away.
but this is still oda and, for some reason, he can't find it in himself to say no to dazai's request. it's not like he's ever been a fan of movies either--it's just something that won't let him say no. perhaps his own conscience. ]
[Because in his books, the entire LOTR trilogy, extended editions counts as one movie.
But no seriously, they're going to be watching the original Terminator. And regardless of if Oda sits next to him on the couch (the TV is on a wall and visible from either couch) or sits on the other one, Dazai is going to be focused on the movie while shoving popcorn in his face.]
[ oda would have watched the LOTR trilogy while comparing it constantly with the books, so perhaps it's a blessing that dazai didn't choose that movie.
oda does sit down on the other couch, not feeling comfortable enough to share a couch with someone that he's supposed to dislike. someone that he does dislike, even if atsushi implied that this was not always supposed to be the case.
but that's not true, is it? even if there is some other version of him that had befriended dazai, that person was not him. that person was another sakunosuke oda, with his own life, troubles, and friends-- one of them dazai, according to atsushi. whatever hurt that dazai showed whenever oda said something blunt was simply because he looked and sounded similar to that sakunosuke oda--odasaku--that dazai knew.
if dazai takes a moment to look towards oda's direction, it'll become painfully obvious that oda is too lost in his own thoughts to even be remotely paying attention to the movie. ]
[Dazai is actually pretty engrossed in the movie, which might be surprising given that this is an American movie and Dazai hadn't even been to America before coming to the Foundation. But he's happily munching away on his popcorn and watching the movie, oblivious to Oda's inner turmoil.
At least, until one of the action sequences starts. That's when Dazai looks to Oda to see if he's enjoying it, and sees that Oda isn't even paying attention at all. That makes Dazai go from "elated to share something he genuinely enjoys with Oda" to "miffed that Oda doesn't also enjoy it", and he tosses a piece of popcorn at Oda's forehead.]
[ if dazai hadn't noticed, oda would've continued ignoring the rest of the world in favor of drowning in his own thoughts. it's not like he even liked mechas anyways.
but when he feels something hit his forehead, he snaps back into attention. he glances at dazai, and then at his lap and-- popcorn?
oda picks it up, and does what any mature adult would do: toss it back at dazai's forehead. ]
[ oda stops when dazai pauses, the sudden change in demeanor causing him to suddenly go into alert-mode for anything that might happen.
when he remembers that atsushi had that very same pause yesterday, oda can't help but feel just a bit...angry. like everyone's dancing around a subject and they won't tell him. ]
Atsushi did that too, yesterday. I'm guessing it has something to do with the other one, but if this is how you two are going to be around me, then I think I should know why.
Nothing, but the other you did mention it. Something about how hard it was to fight them without me.
[ he shrugs. the mafia vs mimic issue had never involved him or his children, so he never gave it much importance. if anything, he had just thought that it was nonsense that the other dazai was spewing out. ]
Mimic was an organization of military-men, all former soldiers from the war. They had no place left in this world and were drifting, looking for a warrior's death. Or so their leader claimed.
...He had the same ability as you. And because of that, he always saw his death coming. As soon as he found out about your ability he went right for you, trying to get you to be the one to finally kill him. Which you wouldn't, because you swore off killing entirely ages ago.
So he blew up your home with everyone minus yourself still inside, to give you the incentive to go after him.
[ there's a long moment of silence from oda. it might even look like he's frozen or paralyzed, if it wasn't for the obvious fact that he's breathing. to think that in a world, all that he worked for would be reduced to ashes-- ]
He was too attached to them. He shouldn't have.
[ it's the obvious conclusion that oda can come up with, but it doesn't exactly make him feel any better. it makes him doubt himself and his own ideals-- to not get attached to anyone, to keep your emotions trained. that had always been what he had told akutagawa during his training, so he wouldn't burn himself up in the search for his sister.
but even if he can talk about this other oda almost clinically, he also knows that he's not any better-- he's always been a hypocrite of the greatest caliber. so, what would he have done if his entire meaning in life was ripped away from him? the answer is obvious. ]
So he went after them and probably let himself die once he was done getting revenge. Right?
[Dazai nods softly. He has to glance away here, if only because even looking at Oda is too difficult right now.]
Because of your abilities, the only way to kill that man was to leave yourself open to getting fatally wounded.
...Himself. The only way he could do it was to leave himself open.
[The way he has to correct himself there is probably pretty telling. He knows that this Oda is a different Oda, it's not his Odasaku, but it's still hard to remember sometimes.]
[ oda nods. the way that dazai corrects himself is appreciated, but now with a bit of added pain behind it. no wonder this dazai had such a pained expression whenever he was angry. ]
There’s no point in asking why you didn’t stop him. [ he knows himself enough to know that would’ve been pointless. ] But were you there when he died? Or did he die alone?
[ oda actually looks taken aback when dazai shows that much emotion, blinking in surprise.
but he quickly settles back down, and shakes his head. ]
No... you don’t seem like the type. You’re too stubborn. [ despite himself, oda can’t help but smile slightly. part of him is relieved to know that his other self didn’t die alone. ] He must have been lucky to have a friend like that in his last moments— even if they’re doing something questionable right now.

Ah, Oda-san! Did you somehow know that it was movie night?
[It's Dazai, in pajamas (normal stripey ones, with bandages on underneath them), with a bowl of popcorn.]
no subject
[ he says it simply, not showing his confusion over dazai looking so...casual. like a teenager, actually. ]
If you’re too busy, then I’ll leave.
no subject
Or sitting on the other couch pretending I don't exist if you want. But that just means no popcorn for you.
