BACKGROUNDHISTORY: I will link this section specifically, which covers a good chunk from his childhood shenanigans. However from here on out, I'll explain myself.
After the aforementioned event, Sakunosuke continued living his life as a famous assassin, going from job to job, until he found himself employed to kill a certain wealthy man. Once the hit was complete, Sakunosuke saw a single novel sitting on the target's desk. Mindlessly, the assassin took the book and continued on his way. What he did not expect, however, was how that book was going to change his life. Reading through the first book he stole from the target, Sakunosuke goes out of his way to find the second book, which he also blazes through. But when he goes to read the third book, he realizes... that he can't find it. No matter how hard he looks, he can't find the third one anywhere. Reluctantly, Sakunosuke conforms himself with this outcome, rereading the two books over and over, until one day, at a certain coffee shop, a strange man comes up to him. The man comments on the two books that he sees the boy constantly reading and, most importantly, the lack of the third book. When Sakunosuke informs the man that he can't find the third book, the man tells him that he should be happy, as the third book is the worst out of the three, and that the boy should just be happy with the first two books, but Sakunosuke doesn't relent; he wants to see the story finished.
The next day, when he visits again, the man gave him the third and final book of the series.
And Sakunosuke loved it. He was drawn to it in a way that he, an assassin that was considered to be an unfeeling killing machine, had never been. In his eyes, the book that the man had described as horrible was incredible. But there was one flaw: the book was missing its final section. Having been cut off at the moment of the climax, Sakunosuke did not actually know how that novel actually ended. So after a lot of considering, he realized that he had no option other than to write the ending himself. But to write is to tell about the living and he, an assassin, has no qualifications to talk about the living. So, in that moment, Sakunosuke made the decision to quit killing and pursue a different life. He picked up odd jobs here and there, even becoming a post man that deals with dangerous artifacts. It's during this time of his life that he meets a strange, bandaged man that's clearly from the Port Mafia, bleeding out at his doorstep. Against his own better judgement, he takes the man in and nurses him back to health... that is until the both of them are kidnapped. Sakunosuke is tortured for information on a very expensive painting that they think that he is safeguarding for a large organization. And he is-- but not for an organization. The organization is a rumor made up and spread by Sakunosuke himself in order to protect said painting. But before the kidnappers can get it out of him, the bandaged man manages to force him to reveal the information of the painting so that the Port Mafia could steal it for himself.
After this betrayal, Sakunosuke a strange man in a coat who advises him to join the Armed Detective Agency--which he does, after two years. In this time, he basically begins running an orphanage on the side with 15 children and even begins writing short stories on the side. He provides the necessary tools for all of them to succeed and thrive, mentoring them the best that he can. And, two years after joining the Agency, he finds Ryuunosuke Akutagawa dying by a river bank, who he rescues and urges him to join the agency as well, becoming the boy's mentor while he tries to find his missing sister. Throughout this mission, Sakunosuke is mostly off screen as he helps with the case, trying to find blackmail that could help with the case. It's there when he meets the boss of the Port Mafia, Osamu Dazai. He tells Sakunosuke of a world where the two of them were friends, and how happy he is to have finally talked to him in this world. Sakunosuke, concerned with Ryuunosuke's safety, responds by threatening to shoot the Boss if he does not comply with his demand to let Ryuunosuke go. Eventually, the Boss of the Port Mafia confirms that Ryuunosuke will be safe, that the Mafia won't bother him anymore...and that he had come to say good bye to him. With one final plea for Sakunosuke to not shoot, he walks away, leaving the detective alone in the bar.
Once the Boss has died, Yokohama returns to normal. Unaware of the truth of the world, that it's a false world maintained for his sake and will fall apart should too many people be aware of its truth, he moves on.
PERSONALITY: Answer three of the following questions. Limit this section to 500-1,000 words in total, or 150-300 words per question. What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature? Sakunosuke, in the novels, is described as a man without ulterior motives. In other words, what you see is what you get. He's a man of few emotions and even fewer words, to the point that some people, including himself, consider him to be a very simple man. But this is not always the case. While he is a very straightforward person without ulterior motives, the truth is that his emotions and thoughts run far deeper than most people would imagine. His narration in the novels are emphasized by his use of metaphors and snarky, often self-deprecating, comments, depicting a colorful world of emotions and thoughts that never reach the surface. He's a man that's deeply worried about himself and those around him, burdened by guilt by his past and doubts over his ability to be
something more than the killer that he was when he was 14. Sakunosuke is observant of people and the world around him in a way that is almost unexpected by most of the people who know about him, as they often underestimate his abilities and consider him to be a somewhat of a pushover with a very powerful ability.
But even he has his breaking point, and it's specifically anyone that betrays him or comes close to the people he considers dear. When that line is crossed, the man that is often considered to be a pacifist pushover will not hesitate to scorch the earth until the scales have been balanced once more. He doesn't forgive nor does he forget. A grudge held by him might as well be like a death sentence, though this is a side that most people will never see in their lives. Should they, however, and it might be the last thing that they see.How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency? Sakunosuke handles stress the same way that he handles every other emotion in the book: by bottling it up inside really well
until one day he dies.
As mentioned previously, Sakunosuke is a man of few expressions and even fewer words. It's difficult for people to see when he's being serious and when he's not because he always has the same blank expression, as if nothing were behind those eyes of his. His perpetual poker face is a remnant of his days as a child assassin, where he was described as vacant and emotionless as he killed hundreds of targets before he was 14. The high stress life that he lead at such a young age gave him the ability to weather almost any stressful situation and handle it in a calm methodical manner...even if on the inside he could still be confused and panic. Even when Ryuunosuke is facing off the entire Port Mafia, he's able to calmly figure out a plan to ensure that the Port Mafia never retaliates against him and the Agency while still panicking about his mentee's state of mind and situation.
However, in an emergency, Sakunosuke's willing to do anything to help those that he considers important to him. He throws all fear and caution to the wind, willing to threaten even the Boss of the Port Mafia, the strongest organization in Yokohama, for the sake of saving his mentor. However if the emergency only involved him and no one else, then he most likely would not become such a one track mind, as he generally doesn't value himself as high as others and knows that he can withstand and escape from very sticky situations. What are your character’s ambitions/goals? Why are they important to your character? For Sakunosuke Oda, his life ambition would have to be defined by the following two sentences:
"There is no forgiveness in this world. Only retribution."
and
"People live to save themselves. It's something they realize right before they die."
The first one was a quote he himself said as a teenager, deep in his job as a hitman. In those times, he had no ambitions or goals. He was happy with simply having a warm meal and a roof to sleep under at the end of the day. He lived a life where what mattered the most were the bonds with his clients and dishing out proper retribution to those that betrayed him. He was a vacant, pitiful existence...until he was given that special book by Natsume Souseki. It was in this book that he read the second quote, told to the protagonist by one of the side characters: an former assassin. It was one of the final lines, where the former assassin was about to explain why he had stopped killing, but the explanation was removed as the final pages had been ripped out by the author himself. This troubled Sakunosuke greatly, until the young boy obtained his first real ambition: to write the ending of the book himself. This goal completely changed his life. He saw writing as a way to talk about life and he, an assassin, had no right to do such a thing. Therefore, he vowed to never take another life again. In order to repent for his crimes, he decided to start taking in orphans and homeless children, helping to feed, clothe, and even educate them, all to get closer to that ideal of 'being worthy to talk about life' that he wants. And while he himself has begun to write novels and is even nominated for an award in the story, none of these are what he really wants to write. In his eyes, he still lacks the qualifications to do so, but nonetheless, he keeps striving for that goal.
INVENTORY: His two guns and underarm holsters.
POWERSSKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Flawless: Flawless is Sakunosuke's ability, which allows him to see the future 5-6 seconds ahead. This is an ability that becomes active at will and he can use it in a variety of scenarios, from fighting to cheating in poker when he needs a little extra cash.
- Marksmanship:
Sakunosuke is a terrifyingly good marksman. Even without using his ability, he is able to go against multiple well-trained soldiers with only his 9mm pistols. Because he no longer shoots to kill, he has trained himself to be able to shoot nonlethally with accurate precision.
NERFING: Considering that his ability is specifically to see 6 seconds ahead, 20% of that would be to see about 1 second ahead.
WEAKNESSES:
- With Sakunosuke's ability "Flawless" he is normally capable of seeing a future 6 seconds ahead, which protects him from most traps and surprise attacks. However, if he is already already caught in the trap before his ability goes off, he has no way to avoid the trap. In other words, things such as poison or chains of events that can predict his patterns are effective ways of countering his ability.
