You distance your own feelings so that they they suffer; it won't matter as much to you.
Or rather you don't want to make yourself part of it.
You remove yourself from a future situation but you won't be able to remove yourself when it actually happens.
So it is unfortunate in two parts.
Your loved ones feel the shadow of care that you refuse to acknowledge.
And you will shatter upon the weight of their loss.
